The Practice of Surgical Pathology

A Beginner's Guide to the Diagnostic Process

Diana Weedman Molavi

editore: Springer International Publishing AG

pagine: 386

Within the field of pathology, there is a wide gap in pedagogy between medical school and residency. As a result, the pathology intern often comes into residency unprepared for the practical demands of the field, and without the foundation to digest professional-level textbooks. Completely illustrated in color, this book is uniquely directed at the junior pathology resident, and goes first through some very basic introductory material, then progresses through each organ system. Within each chapter, there is a brief review of salient normal histology, a discussion of typical specimen types, a strategic approach to the specimen, and a discussion of how the multitude of different diagnoses relate to each other. The book’s goal is to lay the foundation of practical pathology, and provide a scaffold on which to build more detailed knowledge. The second edition retains the informal voice and brevity of the first edition, but with new and expanded chapters, new illustrations, and updated material.

Where many other hepatology textbooks provide detailed accounts of basic science and clinical management, Sherlock's Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System, 13th Edition takes a different approach. Concentrating on the clinical decisions to be taken and the relevant supporting data, it is written and edited to maintain Sheila Sherlock's unique approach, in particular the clarity and layout of the text, and the explanatory figures and tables. The book is thus concise, highly accessible, and generously illustrated with over 700 attractive color figures. There is a pithy approach to each disease based both on evidence and on the authors experience, the hallmark of this book. Based on these elements, the 12th edition was awarded first prize in the 2012 British Medical Association Book Awards in the Internal Medicine category. Sherlock's Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System begins by introducing the anatomy and function of the liver to readers, continuing then with in-depth coverage of liver biopsy techniques and interpretation, and fibrogenesis and its assessment. There are then chapters on all aspects of liver and biliary disease including acute liver failure, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, hepatitis B and C, alcohol and the liver, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, drug related liver reactions, cholestatic, autoimmune and genetic liver diseases, benign and malignant tumours and not least liver transplantation. There are also chapters on the liver in pregnancy, in the neonate, infancy and childhood, in systemic diseases and in infections. This new edition also features four new individual chapters focusing on coagulation, non-invasive assessment of fibrosis and cirrhosis; vascular diseases of the liver and portal vein thrombosis, and nutrition in liver disease. Digital downloads of the figures from this edition are offered on a companion website. Internationally recognized and loved, world-renowned hepatology book, first published in 1955 Takes a one-of-a-kind, clinical approach maintaining Sheila Sherlock s clarity and legacy of presentation Full colour throughout with 700 illustrative figures Wide faculty of international contributors Sherlock's Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System, 13th Edition is an ideal primer in hepatology for students and trainees in hepatology and gastroenterology, and a valuable resource for all specialist gastroenterologists and hepatologists, paediatricians, pathologists, radiologists, general physicians and specialist nurses.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

Definitions, Criteria, and Explanatory Notes

Edmund S. Cibas , Syed Z. Ali

editore: Springer International Publishing AG

pagine: 236

The first edition of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology was published in 2010 and has greatly influenced the practice of thyroid cytopathology. The terminology proposed and illustrated in this text has been widely adopted not only in the U.S. but also abroad. It has become an essential text for pathology trainees and practicing pathologists examining thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. Since 2010, there have been a number of important advances in the management of patients with nodular thyroid disease and in the understanding of the biology of thyroid cancer. This new edition includes these advances that impact terminology for reporting thyroid cytopathology. In particular, it incorporates a discussion of the recently implemented and now widespread use of molecular testing of thyroid FNA samples, which has transformed the management of patients with nodular thyroid disease in the U.S.. In addition, this edition accommodates the recent changes to the classification of thyroid cancer, most notably the introduction of a new thyroid diagnosis, that of "non-invasive follicular tumor with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP)". Thoroughly revised and updated, The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, Second Edition will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It serves as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Giulia d'Amati , Carlo Della Rocca

editore: Edra

pagine: 1366

La nuova edizione del Gallo D’Amati. Anatomia patologica.

Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms

From Imaging to Differential Diagnosis and Management

George H. Sakorafas , Michael Sarr
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 74

This book provides a thorough overview of the detection of PCNs using modern imaging techniques and a clear guide to the recognition of the different subtypes of PCN based on their radiologic and histopathologic features. This volume will serve as an excellent aid to the selection of optimal therapeutic strategies based on preoperative diagnosis. A further important feature is the emphasis placed on radiologic, clinical, and surgical correlations. Pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs) have been increasingly recognized during the past decade, mainly because of the widespread use of modern imaging modalities for the investigation of often unrelated abdominal symptoms. The three most common subtypes of PCN are serous cystic neoplasms, mucinous cystic neoplasms, and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms. These subtypes have distinct radiologic and histopathological features, and their biological behavior differs greatly. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is of prime importance in selecting the optimal therapeutic strategy: while serous cystic neoplasms are almost always benign, and may be treated conservatively, mucinous cystic neoplasms and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms have malignant potential, warranting an aggressive surgical approach, i.e., pancreatectomy. Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms will be of great interest to surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, oncologists, and pathologists, and also to internists and residents in these specialties.
