Adjuvant Analgesics
David Lussier , Pierre Beaulieu
editore: Oxford University Press Inc
pagine: 176
Collective knowledge of the origins and pharmacology of pain are evolving rapidly, providing increased hope for better pain management and a far greater quality of life for patients worldwide. However, there are few works dedicated to guiding primary care practitioners and clinical researchers through the use of adjuvant analgesics. Part of the Oxford American Pain Library, Adjuvant Analgesics provides a detailed discussion of the various classes of these drugs including antidepressants and anticonvulsants, cannabinoids, topical analgesics, and local anesthetics. Chapters cover a basic introduction to adjuvant analgesics for pain control, appropriate clinical applications of the various drug classes in the management of common pain problems, and on drug-drug interactions between adjuvant analgesics and traditional analgesics. Important pain entities such as acute postoperative, cancer-related, neuropathic pain, and fibromyalgia are addressed, filling an important gap in today's medical literature.
Global Surgery and Anesthesia Manual
Providing Care in Resource-Limited Settings

editore: Apple Academic Press Inc.
pagine: 692
In 2008, Paul Farmer and Jim Yong Kim described global surgery as the "neglected stepchild" of healthcare, and now leaders from around the world are working to redefine it as a human right through the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. In order to help advance global surgery and anesthesia as a public health intervention, providers require a practical, hands-on manual to train and educate them to provide safe and effective surgery and anesthesia in resource-limited settings. In an effort to respond to that need, over 140 clinicians from high-, low-, and middle-income countries collaborated to create the Global Surgery and Anesthesia Manual: Providing Care in Resource-Limited Settings. This guide provides in-depth instruction on epidemiology and ethics surrounding surgical services, and on anesthesia, perioperative care, trauma surgery, and non-trauma surgery.
With contributions from a group of culturally and academically diverse clinicians, each chapter is enriched by at least one commentary from a surgeon or anesthesia provider in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who shares first-hand perspectives on the realities and complexities of providing surgical care in these settings with limited resources. The book will serve as a core reference for surgeons and anesthesiologists at all levels interested in global surgery. It will assist those working in LMICs who are confronted with surgical problems that they are not routinely exposed to in their traditional practice. Filled with expert guidance, decision-making algorithms, and treatment options, it will also serve as an invaluable text for trainees in LMICs as it covers the majority of surgical disease processes that would be encountered in such settings.
Trauma Anesthesia
Charles E. Smith
editore: Cambridge
pagine: 776
Trauma patients present a unique challenge to anesthesiologists, since they require resource-intensive care, often complicated by pre-existing medical conditions. This fully revised new edition focuses on a broad spectrum of traumatic injuries and the procedures anesthesiologists perform to care for trauma patients perioperatively, surgically, and post-operatively. Special emphasis is given to assessment and treatment of co-existing disease, including surgical management of trauma patients with head, spine, orthopedic, cardiac, and burn injuries. Topics such as training for trauma (including use of simulation) and hypothermia in trauma are also covered. Six brand new chapters address pre-hospital and ED trauma management, imaging in trauma, surgical issues in head trauma and in abdominal trauma, anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial trauma, and prevention of injuries. The text is enhanced with numerous tables and 300 illustrations showcasing techniques of airway management, shock resuscitation, echocardiography and use of ultrasound for the performance of regional anesthesia in trauma.

editore: Springer International Publishing AG
pagine: 380
This is the first atlas to depict in high-resolution images the fine structure of the spinal canal, the nervous plexuses, and the peripheral nerves in relation to clinical practice. The Atlas of Functional Anatomy for Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine contains more than 1500 images of unsurpassed quality, most of which have never been published, including scanning electron microscopy images of neuronal ultrastructures, macroscopic sectional anatomy, and three-dimensional images reconstructed from patient imaging studies. Each chapter begins with a short introduction on the covered subject but then allows the images to embody the rest of the work; detailed text accompanies figures to guide readers through anatomy, providing evidence-based, clinically relevant information. Beyond clinically relevant anatomy, the book features regional anesthesia equipment (needles, catheters, surgical gloves) and overview of some cutting edge research instruments (e.g. scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy). Of interest to regional anesthesiologists, interventional pain physicians, and surgeons, this compendium is meant to complement texts that do not have this type of graphic material in the subjects of regional anesthesia, interventional pain management, and surgical techniques of the spine or peripheral nerves.
