Secondo una tesi condivisa da molti psicologi, ma assolutamente rivoluzionaria in dermatologia, la pelle è lo specchio del nostro mondo interno; le malattie della pelle più resistenti alle cure mediche sono quelle che spesso si risolvono con il mutare della situazione emotiva del paziente. Dopo aver affermato l'opportunità e la necessità, per il dermatologo, di non dimenticare di essere anzitutto un medico, e di accostarsi al malato tenendo conto di tutti gli aspetti, fisici e psichici, della persona, l'autore riassume alcune nozioni della psicoanalisi - l'apparato psichico, i meccanismi di difesa, l'ansia - utili per mettere in evidenza la natura psicosomatica dei disturbi qui trattati.
