Geriatric Oncology

Treatment, Assessment and Management

Arti Hurria , Lodovico Balducci

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 356

Cancer and aging are integrally related. Cancer incidence and mortality increase with age, with most cancer diagnoses and deaths occurring in patients aged 65 and older. The aging of the Baby Boomer population, along with an overall increase in life expectancy, points to a doubling of the U.S. population over age 65 by the year 2030. This demographic shift, combined with the known association of cancer and aging, is expected to bring about a rapid growth in the older cancer-patient population. It is clear that geriatric principles must become part of oncology care. The evaluation and development of treatment recommen- tions for an older adult with cancer can be challenging for many reasons. Tumor biology and response to therapy are affected by age. In addition, age-related factors may impact treatment patterns, tolerance, and efficacy. These age-related factors include functional status declines, comorbid conditions, changes in cognitive function, weakening of organ function, decreases in physiologic reserve, and faltering social support.

In modo particolare fornisce al lettore una cospicua messe di informazioni che gli consentono di comprendere megli la complessità dei problemi. Rapid Review of Medicine in Old Age

Michael Vassallo , Stephen Allen

editore: Manson Publishing Ltd

pagine: 128

This book has two main purposes: formative case analysis and self-assessment of medicine in old age. It presents clinicians with a series of cases on which to base discussion of the investigation and management of patients. It also provides the trainee, or established doctor, with a medium to help prepare for post-graduate examinations and clinical practice. The authors have chosen 109 cases, a total of 250 questions/answers, illustrated by color photographs, diagrams, and tables. The cases cover the main modes of presentation of acute illness in old age, such as fall, confusion, incontinence, weight loss and immobility, with examples from all the major systems. These illustrate the complexity of diagnosis and treatment of medical illness in frail older people and the need to think widely and laterally when caring for such patients. The questions are mostly in best-of-five format to reflect the current style of multiple choice questions used in examination, though some are open questions as the basis for tutorials. Many of the clinical stems have been expanded to improve the educational function of the book and to test more rigorously the reader's deductive thinking.

Blood Disorders in the Elderly

Giovanni De Gaetano , Lodovicio Balducci
e altri

editore: Cambridge

pagine: 496

The developed world has an increasingly aging population, with approximately 10% of the population aged over 65 years. As the incidence and prevalence of blood disorders increases with age, these conditions are a heavy burden on healthcare systems. The introductory section reviews epidemiology of aging and anemia and provides a comprehensive approach to the management of cancer in the aging patient. This is followed by a full discussion of hemopoiesis and changes it undergoes in aging. The remaining sections cover the diagnosis and management of all major disorders: anemia, malignancy, coagulation and platelet disorders and hemophilia.
