Avoiding Errors in General Practice

Kevin Barraclough , Jenny du Toit

editore: Wiley-Blackwell

pagine: 198

Some of the most important and best lessons in a doctor's career are learnt from mistakes. However, an awareness of the common causes of medical errors and developing positive behaviours can reduce the risk of mistakes and litigation. Written for Foundation Year doctors, trainees and general practitioners, and unlike any other clinical management title available, Avoiding Errors in General Practice identifies and explains the most common errors likely to occur in an outpatient setting - so that you won't make them. The first section in this brand new guide discusses the causes of errors in general practice. The second and largest section consists of case scenarios and includes expert and legal comment as well as clinical teaching points and strategies to help you engage in safer practice throughout your career. The final section discusses how to deal with complaints and the subsequent potential medico-legal consequences, helping to reduce your anxiety when dealing with the consequences of an error. Invaluable during the Foundation Years, Specialty Training and for Consultants, Avoiding Errors in General Practice is the perfect guide to help tackle the professional and emotional challenges of life as a GP.

100 Cases for Medical Data Interpretation

David C. Howlett , Nicola Gainsborough

editore: Hodder Education

pagine: 494

Data interpretation questions based on clinical cases are a popular means of testing medical students both during undergraduate studies and as an element of finals examinations. Written by a small team of authors with extensive teaching experience, 100 Cases in Medical Data Interpretation provides invaluable guidance from lecturers who understand from personal experience that detailed and accurate explanations are the key to successful revision. This book presents 100 cases arranged by specialty area-radiology, clinical chemistry, haematology and cardiology-as well as a random section of miscellaneous cases. e altri

editore: Il Pensiero Scientifico

Integrating East Asian Medicine into Contemporary Healthcare

Hugh Macpherson , Volker G. Scheid

editore: Churchill Livingstone

pagine: 256

Traditional East Asian healthcare systems have moved rapidly from the fringes of healthcare systems in the West towards the centre over the past 50 years. This change of status for traditional medicines presents their practitioners with both opportunities and challenges as the focus shifts from one of opposition towards one of integration into biomedically dominated healthcare systems. "Integrating East Asian Medicine into Contemporary Healthcare" examines the opportunities and challenges of integrating East Asian medicine into Western healthcare systems from an interdisciplinary perspective. Volker Scheid and Hugh MacPherson bring together contributions from acknowledged experts from a number of different disciplines - including clinical researchers, Chinese Medicine practitioners, historians, medical anthropologists, experts in the social studies of science, technology and medicine - to examine and debate the impact of the evidence-based medicine movement on the ongoing modernization of East Asian medicines. This book considers the following questions: What are the values, goals and ethics implicit within traditional East Asian medical practices? What claims to effectiveness and safety are made by East Asian medical practices? What is at stake in subjecting these medical practices to biomedical models of evaluation? What constitutes best practice? How is it to be defined and measured? What are the ideologies and politics behind the process of integration of East Asian medical practices into modern health care systems? And what can we learn from a variety of models of integration into contemporary healthcare?

Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices

a cura di I. Di Carlo , R. Biffi

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 294

Since their first application in 1982, Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs) have become increasingly important in the clinical practice, as more intensive chemotherapy and parenteral treatments have come into use. At this time, there is objective evidence that TIVADs are a safe, effective strategy for long-term venous access; they play a significant role throughout the management of the oncology patient, as they are needed in the initial phases for active treatments as well as in the last stages for palliative measures, making possible repeated administration of chemotherapeutic vesicant agents, nutrients, antibiotics, analgesics, and blood products. According to a number of prospective studies, use of TIVADs is associated with a significant complication rate (10% to 25% of all patients). Evidence-based data support that most complications are directly related to inappropriate technique of placement and/or nursing care, sometimes leading to TIVAD loss, significant morbidity, increased duration of hospitalization, and additional medical cost. A group of world-renowned experts - both in the clinical and research fields - contributed to this volume, whose aim is to provide clinicians, nurses and medical students with a multidisciplinary, full update on these devices, as long term central venous access can no be longer considered a routine matter, and serious complications can be maintained at a very low level only if strict adherence to a well-defined protocol of surgical technique and of catheter care is maintained.
