Intracranial Metastases

Current Management Strategies

Raymond Sawaya

editore: Blackwell Futura

pagine: 512

This is the first comprehensive textbook on intracranial metastases in over 20 years with an update on current methods for their management, including the use of newer technologies. Each of the various histological types of cancer metastasizing to the brain is presented separately in a detailed analysis and discussion. This volume includes a consideration of the epidemiology of brain metastases and the quality of life in patients who have them. Special topics not previously covered are reviewed, including metastasis to the skull base and strategies for preventing cancer from metastasizing to the brain. In this title, a novel feature is a chapter devoted to the use of recent techniques such as functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, MR spectroscopy (metabolite mapping), and dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging (regional cerebral blood volume mapping) to characterize brain metastases in terms of the sensorimotor perturbations they produce, their metabolic response to therapy, and their degree of vascularization, respectively.

Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery

J. D. Pickard

editore: Springer Verlag GmbH

pagine: 380

As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons, we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbuhl. Thus were established the principles of European co- operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have been associated throughout with this senes. The fact that the English language is now the international medium for communication at European scientificconferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contri- butions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume for scrutiny and suggestions for revision. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientificpapers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by specialists in the given fieldsand constitute the first part of each volume.

Standard Variants of the Skull and Brain

Atlas for Neurosurgeons and Neuroradiologists

Wolfgang Seeger

editore: Springer Verlag GmbH

pagine: 378

The author describes in his unique style the anatomical variants of the brain and skull. This atlas is a continuation of his last work on "Neuronavigation and Neuroanatomy". Most anatomical reference volumes show a large number of common and rare variations. This atlas concentrates on well known and little known variants which are especially important for the clinicians, in particular the neurosurgeons and the radiologists. The variants have been grouped after areas of trepanation. The author presents also a number of so far unknown variants gathered from his personal theoretical and clinical experience of 50 years. Exact knowledge of anatomical variations which the surgeon may encounter helps to plan operations and to avoid unexpected complications. Variants of no clinical relevance, even rather common ones, have not been included.

Contemporary Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Technique and Evaluation

Bruce Pollock

editore: Blackwell Futura

pagine: 368

The exponential growth and acceptance rate of stereotactic radiosurgery (as measured by recognized indications and number of treating centers) has been coupled with concern about its possible over-utilization and long-term risks. To provide the most balanced account possible of this controversy, each chapter in this book is followed by a critical commentary from an expert on each indication, often one who does not perform radiosurgery. As a result, the reader benefits from an intelligent discussion of the clinical indications by both advocates and critics of radiosurgery. The book's contributors, true leaders in the field from the United States, Europe, and Japan, represent a wide variety of experience and opinion. Whereas earlier texts devoted large sections to the actual equipment used to perform radiosurgery, as the field matures it is now clear that the technique can be performed equally well with a variety of technologies. Thus, this book has just one chapter on technology, and otherwise concentrates on appropriate indications, use, and patient outcomes. It is the author's hope that neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and neurologists will use the information in this text to decide for themselves the role that radiosurgery should play in treating patients with neurologic disorders.
