Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders
Differential Diagnosis and Treatment, with Desk Top Edition
Alberto Albanese , Joseph Jankovic
editore: Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley & Sons Ltd)

Hyperkinetic movement disorders comprise a range of diseases characterized by unwanted and uncontrollable, or poorly controllable, involuntary movements. The phenomenology of these disorders is quite variable encompassing chorea, tremor, dystonia, myoclonus, tics, other dyskinesias, jerks and shakes. Discerning the underlying condition can be very difficult given the range and variability of symptoms. But recognizing the phenomenology and understanding the pathophysiology are essential to ensure appropriate treatment. Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders provides a clinical pathway for effective diagnosis and management of these disorders. The stellar international cast of authors distils the evidence so you can apply it into your practice. The judicious use of • diagnostic criteria • algorithms • rating scales • management guidelines provides a robust framework for clear patient management. Throughout the text, QR codes provide smartphone access to case-study videos of hyperkinetic symptoms. Purchase includes an enhanced Wiley Desktop Edition.

Emergency Neurology
Karen L. Roos
editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.
pagine: 406
The most common problems for which patients present to the Emergency Department are neurological disorders, including stroke, syncope, back pain and headache. The etiology of the patient's symptoms may be life-threatening, that is, when headache is due to subarachnoid hemorrhage or meningitis, or life-altering, that is, when back pain or weakness is due to spinal cord compression, if not diagnosed and treated urgently. This is a comprehensive textbook of the disorders that are neurological emergencies, including their differential diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment. Designed for any practitioner who makes time-sensitive decisions, Emergency Neurology is an indispensable, one-stop resource to aid your clinical decision-making.
Atlas of Electroencephalography in Sleep Medicine
Hrayr P. Attarian , Nidhi S. Undevia
editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.
pagine: 108
Sleep Medicine is a field that attracts physicians from a variety of clinical backgrounds. As a result, the majority of sleep specialists who interpret sleep studies (PSG) do not have specialized training in neurophysiology and electroencephalography (EEG) interpretation. Given this and the fact that PSGs usually are run at a third of the speed of EEGs and that they usually have a limited array of electrodes, waveforms frequently appear different on the PSGs compared to the EEGs. This can lead to challenges interpreting certain unusual looking activity that may or may not be pathological. This "Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine" is extensively illustrated and provides an array of examples of normal waveforms commonly seen on PSG, in addition to normal variants, epileptiform and non-epileptiform abnormalities and common artifacts. This resource is divided into five main sections with a range of topics and chapters per section. The sections cover Normal Sleep Stages; Normal Variants; Epileptiform Abnormalities; Non-epileptiform Abnormalities; and, Artifacts. Each example includes a brief description of each EEG together with its clinical significance, if any.
Setting the book apart from others in the field is the following feature: Each EEG discussed consists of three views of the same page - one at a full EEG montage with 30mm/sec paper speed, the same montage at 10mm/sec (PSG speed) and a third showing the same thing at 10 mm/sec, but with the abbreviated PSG montage. Unique and the first resource of its kind in sleep medicine, "The Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine" will greatly assist those physicians and sleep specialists who read PSGs to identify common and unusual waveforms on EEG as they may appear during a sleep study and serve as a reference for them in that capacity.
A Practitioner's Guide to Prescribing Antiepileptics and Mood Stabilizers for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities
Jose de Leon
editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.
pagine: 538
Emotional, behavioral, and neuropsychiatric conditions are common in individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs), most notably epilepsy, aggression, self-injurious behaviors, and bipolar and other mood disorders. Despite the prevalence of such problems, there is a scarcity in the literature of reliable information on medical treatments for those with IDs. A Practitioner's Guide to Prescribing Antiepileptics and Mood Stabilizers for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities provides a detailed framework for prescribing for this challenging population. Featuring the most up-to-date information on factors that inform prescribing, the Guide addresses basic issues and controversies (e.g., the rift between evidence-based and personalized medicine) in treating adults with cognitive deficits. Clients' specific needs are emphasized in developing appropriate and effective pharmacological intervention for improved outcomes and quality of life.
Drugs discussed in the Guide include carbamazepine, clonazepam, diazepam, ethosuximide, felbamate, gabapentin, lacosamide, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, lithium, lorazepam, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, pregabalin, primidone, rufinamide, tiagabine, topiramate, valproate, and zonisamide. For each of these compounds, the guidelines cover: * Indications for use; relative and absolute contraindications.* Assessment during treatment; therapeutic drug monitoring; warning signs and symptoms for caretakers.* Dosage: administration; initial and maximum recommended dosage; modifications associated with drug-drug interactions, personal characteristics, and (where appropriate) genetic variations.* Adverse drug reactions: common, relatively uncommon, and potentially lethal, plus risk of metabolic syndrome.* Guidelines for discontinuation.* References, tables, and drug utilization reviews. A Practitioner's Guide to Prescribing Antiepileptics and Mood Stabilizers for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities is an indispensable decision-making reference for psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, psychopharmacologists, neurologists, internists, and clinical psychologists.

This text not only offers a thorough and fresh review of the basicssensory transduction, the neurophysiology of peripheral and central pathwaysand how vestibular signals are processed in the control of gaze and posture; it significantly moves the discussion forward with its attention to the current research and the field's revolutionary advances, such as the understanding of neural correlates of self-motion and the basis of clinical disorders. In addition, the objective presentation of existing controversies is exciting reading and an extremely important contribution to the text's completeness. Dynamic, intellectually challenging, and unique in its level of integration of the material, this book is essential for anyone interested in understanding the vestibular system.
