With the resurgence of tuberculosis as a global phenomenon, and the prevalence of AIDS worldwide, skeletal tuberculosis is on the increase, both in the West and the developing countries. In the U.K. TB has been on the increase since 1987, up 25% in the past ten years, with 7,000 cases per year, and is still one of the world's big killers. Percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) is an entirely new approach to the treatment of herniated intervertebral disc d- ease. The traditional laminectomy and discectomy procedure was first performed at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1934.
